A set of antique mantelpiece figurines from around 1950, often recognizable as cute little dogs with baskets or flowers in their mouths. These two are a male and female Spaniel.
World culture tells us that these whore dogs owe their name to their use as a discreet means of communication, whether a woman was occupied or not. If the figurines' faces were directed towards the room, the woman was occupied; if they faced the street, the woman was available. These two examples were made in England, where the Staffordshire style is also found.
The figurines are undamaged without chips or other defects despite their age and are also beautifully finished with glaze.
Only available as a set and will be professionally packaged with second-hand materials. For shipping outside the Netherlands, please contact us so we can adjust the shipping costs accordingly. We can also handle Customs formalities for you.
